15 WAR CRIES
BLUE DOG LED his men down the Blacks Fork trail until after dark before they stopped and camped, they all wanted to be well away from the home of Grizzly Killer. Was the grizzly that killed their friend sent by the man or his shaman? Would the great bear follow them? Or did Grizzly Killer himself have the power to change into a bear? They all wondered and wanted to be far away from this place.
The Cheyenne were silent, each with their own thoughts as they followed Blacks Fork north. Some of them really believed it had been Grizzly Killer that had killed Three Scalps. Others believed either he or his shaman had the power to control animals and they had sent the great bear to attack them. Whatever had happened, these Dog Soldiers were all nervous.
They posted four guards around their horses and another four around their camp, but none of them would get any sleep tonight. As the sun set, the colors of the sky became a brilliant orange, casting an eerie glow on the land. A great horned owl flew low with his silent wings over their camp. Every one of them saw the owl, and they all knew he was the messenger of death. Which of them would be the next to die?
To hear an owl in the night was bad enough, but to have this death spirit change into a horned owl and fly so close to them was frightening. Was he looking them over to see which would be next or did this mean he was picking several of them? Even White Snake was shaken by the presence of the owl. As the eerie orange light faded into darkness, the owl started hooting, calling to the spirits of the night that at least one of them would die.
White Snake added wood keeping the fire going as he stared into the flames. He was sure if he could make the faces appear once again in the fire, he would find what they wanted and he hoped to learn where they might be.
He saw nothing but flames tonight, no other visions came to White Snake. He threw pinches of his sacred powder into the flames but he couldn’t make the faces or images appear again.
The great horned owl had landed in the top of a pine not far from camp. His ghostlike hoots sent shivers down the back of White Snake and several others. Soon another owl started hooting a little farther away, and then another. Soon there were a half dozen owls calling to one another all around there camp. Many believed the owl was not really a bird at all, but an evil shape-shifting spirit that changed into the form of the owl to choose who would be the next to die.
The stars had not yet faded from the sky when Blue Dog told everyone they were moving out. No one complained or hesitated, they all wanted to be away from Blacks Fork.
